Analysis
Both linear and non-linear analysis techniques are useful in oscillator design. A useful tool, available as a free download with some limitations, is Ansoft's SERENADE SV. This has linear and non-linear analysis tools. I use Eagleware's GENESYS, which has similar capabilities in these areas (without the limitations!) but a far better user interface. Unfortunately, it's not available in a low, or zero cost, format.
The harmonic balance non-linear analysis technique has a few limitations. SPICE is in someways a better tool, particularly when start-up and limiting behaviour needs modelling.
