Summary:

I am a highly experienced radio frequency circuit designer with special interests in receiver, linear transmitter,

power amplifier, and oscillator design. I retain an open mind and a passion for circuit design.

Areas of design experience:

Frequency synthesis: PLL, DDS, fractional-N, hybrid, direct, indirect, low-noise. Oscillators: VCO, SAW, ceramic

resonator, crystal. LNAs: BJT, GaAsFET, HEMT, low-noise, high dynamic range. Receivers: superhet, SDR, direct

conversion, VLF, LF, HF, VHF, UHF, microwave, high dynamic range, pager. Filters: crystal, L/C, transmission-line,

microwave, ceramic resonator, microstrip, waveguide, active, commutating. Mixers: active, passive, diode, FET,

HEMT, image reject, switching, balanced. Power amplifiers: narrowband, wideband, multi-octave, linear, non-linear,

high efficiency, class-E, high power, LDMOS, tube, amplifier combining. Transmitters: upconverting, downconverting,

direct conversion, TETRA, CDMA, FM, AM, data, paging, SSB, FSK, VLF, LF, HF, VHF, UHF, microwave, linear,

Cartesian Feedback Loop, linearisation. Switches: mechanical, solid state, PIN diode, GaAsFET, HEMT, low distortion,

HF, VHF,UHF, microwave. PCB design: multi-layer, microwave.

CAD competencies:

I have experience of the following software tools: Eagleware Genesys, Ansoft Designer, ADS, Protel, KiCAD, Sonnet,

HFSS, EZNEC, Orcad, VariCAD, Softplot, Agilent Vee, ADIsimPLL, several dialects of Spice, a number of

spreadsheets, MATLAB/GNU Octave, and MathCAD.

Computing competencies:

I can use computers running under both MS Windows and Linux. I routinely use both the MS Office and

OpenOffice suites in both environments. I manage a small hetrogeneous network with a SAMBA server.

Patents granted:

1992 US Patent 5,162,862 (with J.S.Strachan)

Two other proposals which went forward to provisional status were not supported by clients.

Employment history:

2003 – date

Self-employed independent circuit designer/consultant.

I have completed projects including emergency locator beacon design, a synthesised software defined UHF

receiver front-end, and an investigation into very low distortion, solid-state HF switching techniques.

2000 - 2003

RF Consultant

Securicor Wireless Technology Ltd., (now Software Radio Technology Ltd.)

This was a senior engineering position, in an active and successful design and consultancy company.

Working both from my home (where I maintain laboratory facilities) and the Company's office, I performed

consultancy and detailed circuit and systems design. I was given considerable freedom to plan my work

schedule, and to explore aspects of radio frequency technology which might have been of future use to the Company.

At SRT my project activities included working as lead engineer in the investigation of a novel transmitter

linearisation concept, in the design of broadband UHF TETRA power amplifier modules, VHF air-band CDMA

transceivers for experimental trials, broadband VHF power amplifier modules, and VHF air-band digital (VDL)

transmitter, and as a contributor to many other projects.

My wider remit included mentoring and appraisal of younger engineers.

1986 - 1999

Independent Electronic Circuit Designer

Specialising in radio frequency and analogue fields.

Clients in academic, industrial, military and government sectors.

1994 -1995

Guest lecturer on postgraduate radio frequency design course. University of Essex, Colchester, UK.

1993 - 2000

Lecturer in radio frequency circuit design on CPD courses, given by Radio Frequency Investigation Limited and the Low Power Radio Association.

1980 - 1986

Managing Director

MuTek Limited,

Management of small, successful electronics company specialising in both contract design and manufacture of radio

frequency electronic products. The company was sold, but still continues to trade.

1977 - 1980

Senior Engineer

Techtest Limited,

Responsible for the day-to-day management, and for electronic design (mainly radio frequency) of the Electronic

Test Equipment subsidiary of H.R.Smith (Technical Developments) Ltd., a major European supplier of radio antennas

to the aerospace industry.

1976 - 1977

Development Engineer

Electro-Medical Supplies (Greenham) Limited,

Development of medical diathermy equipment using radio frequency, analogue and digital electronic techniques.

Membership of professional bodies:

Member of IET (Formerly IEE)

Other interests:

Radio astronomy and amateur radio:

My interests include earth-moon-earth communication at microwave and millimetre-wave frequencies and convening a group involved in developing Open Source software defined equipment for microwave amateur radio and amateur radio astronomy.

Music:

I play a number of stringed instruments, and write music for my own pleasure.
